Wherever I went for the next two days, our vehicle was preceded by either a police car or a military escort. The authorities wanted to be sure that no-one kidnapped me!

with the laboratory staff. In the evening, we ate on the banks of the Nile.
On Sunday morning, a minibus arrived with 7 people from the institute plus, of course, our friends from the police. The first visit was to the large Coptic monastery on the mountainside about 10 km from Assuit. When the Holy Family fled into Egypt to escape Herod, they are reputed to have travelled as far as this place before starting their return journey.
