My son, John, and I went trekking over Christmas and the New Year in an area called the Jebel Sahro. It lies between the High Atlas mountains and the Sahara desert. The region is arid and rocky. Many of the hills have been eroded into mesas and buttes, reminiscent of SW USA.
The inhabitants are Berbers, who traditionally are nomadic although most of them are now settled in small villages.
We were in a group of twelve with a tour leader and a Berber guide. Our tents and other equipment were carried by mules.
