I am a member of the Labour Party and was a Councillor from 1976 until May, 2007. I represented an area in South Reigate.
The Council is presently under Conservative control. During my time, I chaired several key Committees. For the last six years, I was Chair of
the Overview & Scrutiny Committee, which acts as a watchdog overseeing the work of the Executive Committee. You will find further information about the Committee here.
From 1995-98, I headed a Labour-Liberal Democrat coalition, which controlled the Council. During that time, we introduced the doorstep recycling scheme, which increased the amount of household refuse recycled from 7% to 21%.
In July, 2007, I was given the distinction of being made an Honorary Freeman of the Borough. Since the present Borough was created in 1974, only two other people have been given this award, the other two, unfortunately, are now dead.
